In the past – the early years, the San people were living in total darkness, but they knew about fire. The only way they knew how to make fire was; when it rained the rainbows used to throw off the red colour on to the soil. There will be a fungi, the San people will take the fungi and put in the sun, it will then start to burn. So they did not always have fire.
One day the men ‘the hunters’ went out to hunt, they came across an area where Ostriches lived, they saw that the Ostriches were making fire. They followed the tracks of the Ostriches and when they came close to them, the San people hid away in the bushes to see what the Ostriches were doing. They were using funny sticks and from these sticks there was fire! They then came out of their hiding place and asked the Ostriches what they were doing – the Ostriches explained to them, that they are using these sticks to make fire. They showed the San people how to make and use the sticks. From there the Bushman knew how to make their own fire whenever they wanted or needed fire.
The San people also believes that Ostriches and Lions were people that turned.
