The Greater Team here at Footsteps in Africa, which walked the walk with me a HUGE thank you, to each of you for all your hard work and dedication. We soon will be releasing a dedicated series on each one of our Botswana properties… this is due to a huge demand from the trade to have detailed information on each of the respective products. We will call the series; Focus On… we plan to start with Delta Camp.

Delta Camp's new managers Jess & Amy are settling in well, and releasing Leno to concentrate on the guiding side of things, - Leno is one of the most talented and gifted local guides and it is a rare privilege to be out with him. On the subject of guides, the recently formed and fully accredited Okavango Guides School will conduct an intensive 15-day guides' training session at Delta Camp from March 8th to 21st.

We are selecting our first 8 participants now and are confident that the training and motivation will galvanize our guides and create a competitive environment in which they can thrive. They have such a wealth of knowledge and experience – not to mention that Chiefs Island is 200 meters away from Delta Camp – boasting arguably the best game experience in Botswana.

We are pleased to announce that Joyce Majoni, formerly of Kwando Safaris, has joined us as assistant manager. Joyce has a wealth of experience in the industry, from operations through reservations and management. She will add depth to our management team and despite having been in camp for just a few days, has already impressed our staff with her energy and attention to detail.

Our bar and lounge area has been completely re-reeded, and is shining in the sunlight - of which we are at last getting our fair share. All furniture is being sanded and oiled and is coming up beautifully, and the staff are visibly enlivened by the prospect of a busy season ahead. Even better news is that we are, with immediate effect, offering mokoro trails again.

At the risk of disclosing certain classified information, it is exactly 30 years since Peter Sandenbergh has ever seen local rain fill the Okavango like it has this year. We are at high flood levels, with the flood still a couple of months away. Perhaps we are about to be reminded that the Makgadikgadi is in fact a seasonal lake.

We have been blessed with our wild dog behavior ... the photograph below shows one of the most amazing sights ever recorded with record to wild dog behavior ... this is a Alpha pub feeding the beta puppies... the phenomena has been recorded once before in the wild but never photographed .. well here is the proof. Wild dogs can have two litters in a year in the same pack from two different females and yes the pack will/ can assist to raise the second litter - amazing!!

The current edition of Africa Geographic (pages 18-21) features an excellent article on extraordinary Wild Dog behaviour witnessed at Mapula Lodge recently, it is re-writing scientists perception and understanding of Wild Dog behaviour.

New Package: ”Pack full of Surprises ”

To celebrate this most unusual behaviour we have launched a new 5-night package, starting and ending in Maun. Spend 3 nights at Mapula Lodge – Northern Okavango Delta were you could be so lucky as to see these amazing Wild Dogs and then flight transfer for 2 nights at Grasslands Bushman Lodge – Central Kalahari. At Grasslands Lodge we have a pack of Wild Dogs at their Problem Predator Centre – so guaranteed sightings and gain first hand knowledge of these endangered predators.

Contact us for full details – anthony@footsteps-in-africa.com

OPTIONAL:  Extend the package with two nights at Delta Camp – on the Southern edge of Chiefs Islands. Walking safari in the Okavango Delta at its very best.

All individual agents booking the above package in 2008 will earn themselves a free year long subscription to Africa Geographic Magazine, complements of Footsteps in Africa and we will  donate US$ 100 -00 on your behalf to the Botswana Predator Conservation program Botswana Predator Conservation Program

The Santawani Partnership is proceeding apace - we had our first stakeholders' meeting, hosted by the Department of Environmental Affairs, at which the draft EIA was presented by the consultants, and approved bar a few small changes for the better, and at which we thrashed out a number of issues with other interested parties. We will be in the midst of the largest predator research initiative Botswana has ever seen, and our guests can look forward to a predator experience, and learning experience, without equal.

Lodge plans are being polished and on every front we are moving closer to the operational phase. Very exciting. At this junction we wish to clear up a few misconceptions regarding Sankuyo that are floating about in the trade…. The lease will belong to the community and the operational company that will be responsible for the day to day will be a joint venture between the community and Lodges of Botswana … joint venture as in 50/ 50 stake!

Delta Air will be expanding its fleet this year, starting with a C206. This will be followed by a brand new, out-the-box G8 Airvan from Australia. We are pleased to announce that all aircraft in the fleet have been resprayed and the interiors done… thanks to KG and the team. Further good news is that we have increased our luggage allowance to 20kg per passenger. However PLEASE ensure your clients put it in soft bags.

I recently had the opportunity to pay both Deception Valley Lodge and Central Kalahari Game Lodge a visit, the veld/ bush is looking absolutely amazing. It has been many years since I have seen the Kalahari so green and lush. Wildlife sighting have been excellent with lions and other predators regularly seen … thanks largely to our excellent San trackers.

The new addition to the main complex is looking very good indeed and then new sofa’s are ideal to sit back in and view the wildlife coming down to drink. The Kalahari Suite is nearing completion and will open as scheduled… congratulations to Gerhard and the rest of the team.

This image clearly portray the green wonder of the Central Kalahari….work is steadly progressing at Central Kalahari Game Lodge..

Neeltjie and her team have been busy with some changes to the lodge too preparing for the season.. the biggest change is the access to the lodge. Guests who have returned from Grasslands have been amazed by the game experience the San and the problem predator project.
